SSU Definitions of Online and Blended Teaching Modalities
Sonoma state defines the following course modalities in the SSU’s Online and Blended Instruction Policy:
- Online Course - A course where most or all of the content is delivered online. Typically has no face-to-face meetings.
- Blended Course - A course that blends online and face-to-face delivery. A substantial proportion of the content is delivered online, typically uses online discussions, and typically has a reduced number of face-to-face meetings.
- Web-Facilitated Course - A course that uses web-based technology to facilitate what is essentially a face-to-face course. May use a course management system or web pages to post the syllabus and assignments. This is not considered an online or blended format.

- SSU’s Online and/or Blended Instruction Policy (Policy #2013-1)
- Master Catalog Course Change Form for Existing Courses (MCCCF)
- Classes scheduled as blended or fully-online must be approved for that delivery mode in the SSU catalog. If your class has not been approved for your proposed delivery mode, please consult with your department about submitting an MCCCF.
- MCCCFs must be submitted to EPC for review no later than the corresponding due date for each term in order to be considered. Review the call for proposals.

Online Learning Platform (Canvas)
Canvas, SSU’s learning platform, is available to all faculty teaching SSU courses, regardless of the course is taught face-to-face or fully online. Several Canvas courses/sections may be merged ("metacourse") into a single course. Additionally, the content may be copied from semester to semester. Students are automatically enrolled in Canvas.
Faculty provides students with flexible ways of learning when they use Canvas to:
- Share accessible syllabi, lecture recordings, affordable learning materials, library resources, and online multimedia.
- Engage students with collaborative learning activities including forums, pages, assignments, and Zoom web conferencing sessions.
- Assess student learning and provide them with timely feedback with interactive quizzes, annotated comments, peer-review activities, integrated rubrics, academic integrity checks with Turnitin, and an online grade book.
- Communicate with the class and individual students with Canvas Inbox, forums, and web conferencing (via Zoom).
- Collect student work with Canvas activities such as assignments, forums, and Turnitin Framework.
- Web conference to meet your entire class online or invite remote guest speakers into your class with Zoom web conferencing. Zoom includes webcam, voice, chat, screen-share for PowerPoint and other applications, and chat.
